Classroom Curriculum
Math:
Grade 1, we use Bridges and Number Corner Math Programs. Both programs allow students to engage with math concepts in hands on activities in order to help build a greater understanding of concepts.
Both highlight the various forms of Math and allow students to broaden their mathematical perspectives in order to view math in the world all around us.
Bridges and Number Corner Math Programs allow teachers and students to build successful math skills with innovative and engaging lessons, problem based interactive learning, small group instruction, research-based standards, and reliable teaching tools.
Literacy:
In Grade 1, we use Pearson’s Reading Street Common Core Edition to support rigorous levels of reading and writing in the classroom. The curriculum is characterized by:
Reading Street Common Core helps the Academy implement the Common Core state standards and increase student achievement while instilling a love of reading.
Religion
For Religion, Grade one will use the Sadlier We Believe religion program - the program helps build Catholic Identity around core Catholic beliefs, which allows students to strengthen and engage in their faith.
Social Studies:

- Lessons with guiding questions to assess understanding which include Big Ideas and Essential Understandings.
- Teachers are able to customize lesson plans, which allows instruction to be differentiated at all instructional levels.
- Both Programs have strong focus on reasoning and conceptual skills. When students are exposed to reasoning skills early on become more confident, independent learners. Through the program, students are able to develop a deeper understanding of the mathematical concepts and apply the skills learned in everyday life.

- Developmentally appropriate phonemic awareness and phonics lessons
- Weekly leveled non-fiction and fiction readers allowing for differentiation of instruction
- Weekly stories, songs, and poems
- Rich vocabulary instruction – we call them “Amazing Words”
- High Frequency Words and Spelling Words
- Focused building of content area knowledge (science, history, and social studies) to strengthen vertical alignment across grade levels
- A rich and engaging technology platform (REALIZE) for teachers and students
- Literacy stations/centers
- Guided Reading Groups

- Integrated based on Reading Street themes - Grade 1 will cover things such as, people throughout history, important U.S. symbols and landmarks, and U.S. holidays just to name a few!
Science:
- Integrated based on Reading Street themes - Through our integrated curriculum, Grade 1 will cover things such as, animals, habitats, the seasons, plants, the solar system and so much more!
